I love what I read in my “One Line a Day” memory book this morning: “Prayer opens the journal on the day and sets the tone for what will be written on its pages.”
It’s not lost on me that I pick up a notebook at the end of my devotional hour, when worries and fears have been displaced in my mind and heart by the love, comfort, encouragement, direction and joy I find in that time with God. Not only then am I able to write something of worth on the paper pages, but it allows Him the chance to write something of value in me using the minutes He gives me during the rest of the day.
Maybe it’s an age-related thing, but everywhere I look, I see the mention of the importance for women… especially aging senior women… to put thoughts to paper at the start of each day. There is a long list of mental health benefits from this practice. Personally, I love the idea of letting fears and worries leak from the confines of my mind through the ink of a pen onto a blank page. Once the ink is put down on paper it can’t be reclaimed by the writing instrument. What a beautiful picture that is of giving our cares to the Cross and leaving them there, in spite of our tendency to return and try to pick them up again and carry them once more.
But we shouldn’t let our journaling end there. Having let go of the weight, casting off the clutter in our souls, we are now ready to let the Lord of Light shine brightly into our lives, leading the way as the Son journeys across our skies by day… filling the pages of our lives with His life and love… putting His Worth into our words and works as we walk with Him in both work and play.
“Thus days the Lord, the God of Israel: Write in a book all the words that I have spoken to you.” (Jeremiah 30:2 ESV)
