The fact that I was in Africa at all was pretty unbelievable
to me. And if you then add all the incredible things we saw, the experience as
a whole was unbelievable, as well. It’s pretty hard to pick just one amazing sight
from the sheer number of them to focus on, but one that for sure blew our minds
was the morning we were driving in the Serengeti, rounded a curve… and came
across two huge male lions lying in the road!!! Thankfully they didn’t seem
hungry – the females are the hunters in the pride, and surely this pair had just
eaten their fill and were sleeping it off in the shade of a tree. We were intimidated by
the
sheer size of their giant paws, and yet were
so close to them that it was almost tempting to reach down and stroke their
thick manes! The unexpectedness of the sighting combined with the sheer beauty
of the animals and the fact that we were
so close to them made for an unforgettable
experience!
Absolutely unaffected by our arrival, even when other safari
vehicles came up behind and pulled around us, they continued to lie where they
were when we first came across them. The only sound the clicking of multiple
camera lenses and a few excited whispers, we simply gawked and barely breathed,
so anxious were we for them to sit and stay a while. Eventually they got up and
wandered off, in no hurry and with no apparent destination in mind, but leaving
behind an experience none of us is likely to every forget.
“…’Eye has not seen,
nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has
prepared for those who love Him.’”
(1 Corinthians 2:9
NIV)
