Giraffes are everywhere in Tanzania! Maybe it just seems so, because their long necks make them easy to spot! Singly or in groups, they dotted the landscape everywhere we went. Many were the moments when one happened to be feeding right next to the road we were on, undeterred by our close proximity and obvious fascination, giving us wonderful viewing opportunities and camera shots!
I was touched when our guide told us that the giraffe is Tanzania’s national animal because it is kind, beautiful, and non-aggressive. I didn’t realize that the spot pattern of a giraffe is unique to each individual animal, much like a fingerprint, nor that a giraffe can be classified as belonging to one of nine subspecies by the shape of the spots themselves. Indeed, I thought all giraffe spots were pretty much the same and am reminded of the incredible details of creation that we so easily miss. Oh, for eyes to see! So of course I had to compare the spots of a giraffe we saw and photographed to those of the nine subspecies shown on the chart.
“But ask the animals, and they will teach you, or the birds in the sky, and they will tell you; or speak to the earth, and it will teach you, or let the fish in the sea inform you. Which of all these does not know hat the hand of the Lord has done this? In his hand is the life of every creature and the breath of all mankind.”
(Job 12:7-10 NIV)
